Model Shipbuilders

The Shipmodeler's Online Community

Looks like this site is off to a good start, hope you don't mind having a beginner aboard. I started my first ship a few weeks ago, Model Shipways' Phantom. So far I'm having a lot of fun with it and I think I'm hooked. Please take a look at my photos and feel free to criticize.

Dan..

Very nice work. Remember standard construction methods require nothing left to glue alone. I use bamboo to scale or brass pins.

Hi Dan,

Nice work! Glad to have you on board. I, too, am relatively new. I'm only working on my second model (the Bluenose). My first model was also the Phantom.

Ross,

Thank you. The only thing I've pinned so far are the chainplates and I used the tiny brass pins that came with the kit for those. Everything else is just glued, hopefully it will stay together.

Rob,

Thanks, so far it's gone OK, I'm a little worried about the rigging but I'll keep doing one step at a time and see how it goes!

Mike,

Thanks for the welcome, I look forward to contributing whatever I can. Your Phantom looks great, I can't wait until mine is done. I'm also seriously considering the Bluenose or another similar fishing schooner for my next project, I love their sleek lines. Which Bluenose kit are you working on?

I'm working on the Model Shipways Bluenose kit. I also purchased the practicum for the kit from Lauck Street Shipyards. It was more expensive than the kit itself, but it is very, very helpful.

Hello Dan,

Can't find anything to criticize, a very workmanlike job.

Hi Mike,

I've yet to see anybody say they wasted their money on one of the Lauck Street practicums, I downloaded one of the sample chapters and I can see why, it looks like it would be really helpful, especially to someone like myself who doesn't have much experience. I'm using Chuck Passaro's practicum for the Phantom and it's been a huge help, I think I will try to make sure my first planked model is one that is covered by a Lauck Street practicum so that I will have the option of purchasing one. How would you rate that specific part of the Bluenose practicum?

Thanks Al! There's a few things that I always see but I'll do better on the next one!

I would rate the hull planking part pretty high. I think there is a lot that was left out or not explained as thoroughly (for example, about how to properly shape the planks - spiling?); but one nice thing about his method for the bluenose is how he finishes the hull prior to painting. It basically hides any mistakes. I successfully planked the hull, but I can't say that I'm ready to plank one that does not get painted.
